Digital Health

The New Zealand Ministry of Health defines digital health as the use of digital technologies, accessible data, and the cultural shifts they bring, to empower New Zealanders to manage their health and well-being, while transforming the delivery of healthcare.

Digital technologies have become an essential part of everyday life, connecting people across Aotearoa more than ever before. Although innovation in the digital space is progressing rapidly, its potential to enhance population health remains underutilised, offering significant opportunities for the adoption of digital health solutions.

Collaborative Aotearoa is committed to fostering learning and leveraging digital technologies and health innovation to accelerate national progress towards improved health and well-being.

Telehealth in Primary Care

The NZ Telehealth Forum and The Medical Council of NZ defines telehealth as healthcare delivered via digital technology, where patients and providers may be separated by time or distance.

Collaborative Aotearoa views telehealth as an additional tool and, in appropriate clinically safe situations, an alternative mode to enhance accessibility, especially for remote or high-needs populations. We support standardisation, patient empowerment, provider training, and digital infrastructure, recognising telehealth as an option to support continuity of care.

Joint Media Release - AI in Primary Care Survey Findings

Survey reveals key challenges and opportunities for AI in primary care.

Results of a recent survey show New Zealand’s general practices are cautiously exploring the use of AI tools with hopes of improving efficiency while reducing clinician burnout and clinical administrative burdens, ultimately creating more time to focus on patient care.

“Our group formed to support the adoption of AI in primary care and these survey results validate our roadmap, in particular activities we have in mind for governance, compliance, implementation and training,” says spokesperson for the group Dr Janine Bycroft, Health Navigator Charitable Trust Founder and CEO and specialist GP in Mount Wellington.

Conducted during July and August, the survey was open to all those who work in primary care in New Zealand and attracted over 300 responses.

Asthma Trial - Dr Amy Chan, Professor Partha Roop and Professor Jeff Harrison

This research aims to develop a prediction model for asthma attacks, by capturing changes in the body that may happen before an attack occurs, using smart devices such as smartwatches. The data will then be used with machine learning to look at developing new ways to predict asthma attacks.

"I would ring up and the next appointment would be a week later, which would put me off. I think that was the reason I would hardly ever come in. It’s much better this way – the doctor rung me back and I was able to tell him what was going on with me and he made me an appointment straight away."
